Carolanne MacLean I feel I am working with energy, whether painting or sculpting. I am interested in the healing value of colour and the surprising beauty of the accidental mark, and intrigued by the very existence of our response to beauty. Carolanne MacLean was born in Toronto in 1949. She is a graduate with honours of the Ontario College of Art in Fine Art and has a B.A. from the University of Toronto. Her large encaustic abstract works are a study in light, colour and texture, sometimes involving the figure, often nonrepresentational. Her City Souls paintings capture moments, passing expressions on the faces around us. She pursues the beauty of the figure through a regular sculpture practice. 2023 < All Sculptures 2023 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Contact Artist for Pricing Aerial Mark Puigmarti Aerial Forged Stainless Steel & Bronze Sometimes my work is a result of visualizing processes of forging effects, and reinterpreting these effects as details in the natural world. Ariel uses several forging processes that combine in the simplistic form of a heron about to take fight. Mark Puigmarti What seems like lifetimes ago I was refrigeration and HVAC mechanic. Working on commercial industrial gizmos that kept things or people warm or cold, while usually experiencing the polar opposite temperature of whatever it was I was trying to rectify. It is a respectable trade that many men and some women make a respectable living at. However, as much as I tried to make the piping arrangements visually pleasing, orderly, and followable there was something lacking. It just never quite clicked with my persistent dream to follow a more artistic path. One day about half way into a 25-year run at HVACR, I made it my mission to try and change what seemed truly unchangeable. Slowly with a long list of coincidences, happy accidents and a load of sacrifices, particularly by my supportive wife Chris, positive results started to accumulate in the intended direction of working with hot metal. This did indeed take 10 years of incremental progression to end up at the beginning of a new and completely unrecognizable life and style. It is not lost on me to grasp the sheer improbability to do that mid-career, in that career, or any for that matter. That cord was cut 14 years ago now." Oracle is presented on a wooden base which has been treated to withstand the elements. Oracle stands 17 inches tall, gazing upon and holding a precious rock. A contemplative figure contemplating the future. So much coming our way, so many trying to help, will we make the right decisions? 2022 < All Sculptures 2022 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Contact Artist for Pricing Brenna Donna Mayne Brenna From the “Gift of Water” series, Brenna is a 3/4 life-size figure cast in bronze using the time-honoured lost wax method. Seated with extended toes, as if testing the water, she acts as a romanticized steward of this source of life. Her inspiration came from concerns for the fragility of nature and years of volunteer work spent as a safe-water advocate. Donna Mayne Much of Donna's art career was spent as an Art Director, leading teams of artists in the planning, creation and installation of a series of large-scale public art projects comprising of more than 40 mural sites. All were site-specific; delivered on time and under budget. Donna is comfortable in collaborative environments that involve various levels of government, as well as local business groups and private collectors. Donna's classical training made the transition from muralist to sculpting an exhilarating one. She began her new enterprise, "Fine Sculpture," in 2013 and began exhibiting in international competitions in 2015 with her first two pieces being awarded. Donna has her Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) from the University of Windsor and studied Figure Drawing and Commercial Art at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. 2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Not for Sale VR Lion Thoreau Bakker The VR Lion This sculpture is a remix of a public work located just outside of the Fairmount Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto. The public work (uncredited sculptor) was digitally captured using photogrammetry and reworked in virtual reality sculpting software with the addition of a headset. It is a juxaposition of the traditional and contemporary, referencing the long tradition of lions as sculptural objects with modern digital tools. This sculpture was created using 3D scanning and 3D printing. Thoreau Bakker Thoreau is a Canadian artist and academic. He is currently pursuing a practised-based PHD at TMU. Thoreau studied studio art as an undergrad at Guelph in 2015, and was drawn to the aesthetics of contemporary sculpture and learning about digital fabrication. He was interested in materiality and the formal qualities of sculpture and wished to emulate the work of pop artists like Niki de Saint Phalle and Takashi Murakami. Thoreau loves to experiment with all kinds of different types of tools and materials. These include digital sculpting, clay sculpting, 3D scanning, 3D printing, CNC, mesh editing, mold making, fiberglass and resins. He hopes to work with aluminum and bronze in the future. Thoreau has shown his sculptures in the Elora Sculpture Project and has returned again this year to Haliburton. 2023 < All Sculptures 2023 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $2,800.00 Orange Bloom Kristi Chen Orange Bloom Rattan Reed & Steel Orange Bloom is a sculpture that showcases the amalgamation of traditional craft practices and industrialized mediums. The basket is hand woven coated with an orange silicone finish attached to a welded curved steel armature. It is shaped into an organic form mimicking moments of a flower blooming. Utilizing lost basketry techniques in conjunction with manufactured finishes introduces the hybridization of time period and cultures. The basket vessel symbolizes the ancestral past while the silicone rubber coating reflects the current currency. The combination between the woven and the silicone rubber changes and evolves into another medium. Kristi Chen Parts of my identity are embedded in the pieces I created, not a portrait, but a sense of my fragmented existence. As a Toronto based multi-disciplinary cultural producer and artist, I am interested in themes of intergenerational, ancestral archives and how it relates to experiences of the diaspora. I was raised in Singapore, then the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong (SAR) which has made me cognizant of constant migration, influencing the subject matter and materiality in my practice. I seek to find comfort within my diasporic experience using sculptural forms to communicate identity. Imaginative creatures and dystopic, surreal environments are drawn from notions of my collective and personal experiences. Basket-weaving and smell are a big part of my sculptures, as it is a lost technique in my paternal side of the family. It is important for me to address cross-cultural perspectives, trans-generational traumas and re-interpretations of ancient Asian ideologies. I currently use traditional weaving techniques with synthetic materials to speak towards the relationship of the ancient and the anthropocene. 2019 < All Sculptures 2019 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $750.00 Virtual Reali-Kitty Thoreau Bakker Thoreau Bakker is a Toronto-based contemporary artist, with a current focus on three-dimensional (3D) media. He holds an honours B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Guelph, and a master’s degree (MFA) from OCAD University. His MFA thesis questioned Walter Benjamin’s generalizations about aura and the mechanical reproduction of art in the context of recent 3D technologies like 3D printing and Virtual Reality. Current visual interests include neo-pop and mass-produced objects, of both aesthetic and utilitarian natures: toys, product packaging, etc. Current academic interests include the relationship between contemporary art and research, our definition of knowledge and the ways we acquire, synthesize and share it. 2021 < All Sculptures 2021 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Part of Sculpture Forest Collection Depth Don Frost Depth I had a lot of fun making this piece during the COVID-19 lockdowns. It was a real escape from the world and just evolved into this primitive, organic shape. I live beside a bike trail and this piece brought in many people off the path to see what I was working on. The mount is also unusual for me, going up on a diagonal which gives the piece some extra movement. The finish is graphite, top coated in a prismatic gold to magenta paint. The piece is made from fiberglass, and composites and is designed to withstand weather extremely well. Don Frost “The act of being a sculptor and continually experiencing the creative challenges in this multidimensional world causes a thought process that spills over into all facets of life causing the world of the artist to become a work of art” Peterborough born Don Frost had his future path laid out for him by winning first prize in a city wide art exposition at age six in grade one. The following year at age seven, Don had a group showing at thePeterborough Public Library. Public school had its usual trials and tribulations and it was not until grade 10 that Don discovered that he was colour blind to all but the primary colours. At this point Don’s life took a right turn and sculpture was all that he focused on. Don teamed up with a friend in grade 11 who became his art agent and they enjoyed considerable success in the Peterborough area. Afterhigh school Don took some time off to do his art and apprentice as a mechanic for a year. In 1973-74 he attended Sheridan Art College followed by a decision to become a professional sculptor having just received a major commission for a large 15' tall sculpture for a new mall being built in Peterborough, Ontario. This was followed by the creation of the largest sculpture in Canada in 1983 by winning a competition for an indoor work for the Michael Starr Building in Oshawa, Ontario. Always seeking new outlets for art Don acquired an art agent in Ottawa which led to an introduction to a patron who kept Don busy creating more than 40 sculptures in a period of twenty years. Don’s work internationally was recently a commission for four large works for a garden in Club Medjulis in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Previously to this in an expansive design project by the late King Hussein for a 1.6 km wall of huge relief panels commemorating the history of Jordan, Don’s work on six of these panels was accepted by King Abdullah. Experiencing greater notoriety for the global uniqueness of his art, Don was presented with awards from Peterborough County and commemorated in the Walk of Fame. It represents a tranquil and thoughtful young woman. With her hair tied back, Annie depicts the ease of beautiful youth. When Caroleanne was creating Annie, she explained that she works with a sculpture until she feels the rhythm of the shape. She continues sculpting until she is totally satisfied with something that is beautiful. Carolanne MacLean I feel I am working with energy, whether painting or sculpting. I am interested in the healing value of colour and the surprising beauty of the accidental mark, and intrigued by the very existence of our response to beauty.
