2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $4200.00 Nature Prevails Mark Puigmarti Nature Prevails I Mark Puigmarti created Nature Prevails I using forged and fabricated structural steel. The sculpture stands 72" high and weighs approximately 200lbs. Nature Prevails I is intended to inspire hope. No matter what humankind builds, creates, or discards, nature will prevail. This piece represents a minute example of a structural bridge detail called a gusset plate connection. Carefully designed and engineered for structural integrity using steel elements like angle iron and steel plates riveted throughout, is in itself an amazing feat of human innovation and progress. Yet even these monumental structures uncared for, or abandoned are always trying to revert back to their elemental beginnings through slow decay. These three angle iron sections have been hot forged into vine like growth returning back to their natural origins. Mark Puigmarti What seems like lifetimes ago I was refrigeration and HVAC mechanic. Working on commercial industrial gizmos that kept things or people warm or cold, while usually experiencing the polar opposite temperature of whatever it was I was trying to rectify. It is a respectable trade that many men and some women make a respectable living at. However, as much as I tried to make the piping arrangements visually pleasing, orderly, and followable there was something lacking. It just never quite clicked with my persistent dream to follow a more artistic path. One day about half way into a 25-year run at HVACR, I made it my mission to try and change what seemed truly unchangeable. Slowly with a long list of coincidences, happy accidents and a load of sacrifices, particularly by my supportive wife Chris, positive results started to accumulate in the intended direction of working with hot metal. This did indeed take 10 years of incremental progression to end up at the beginning of a new and completely unrecognizable life and style. It is not lost on me to grasp the sheer improbability to do that mid-career, in that career, or any for that matter. That cord was cut 14 years ago now." 2019 < All Sculptures 2019 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $2,100.00 Vitessence David Cross David Cross belongs to a select group of Artisan Blacksmiths who work full-time in the craft, preserving its traditional techniques and aesthetics but employing them in contemporary design. He creates both functional metalwork and sculpture. David’s artistic practice has expanded beyond hand-forged works to include other media and methods. He has produced castings of aluminum and silicon bronze using the ancient lost wax technique, and has created assemblies including materials such as stainless steel, repurposed machine parts, and found objects. In some of his work natural, flowing shapes are coaxed from the metals while in others the human and organic elements are presented against the industrial, engineered environments. A native of Galt, Ontario, David now lives in Fergus and operates Rio Bravo Ironworks in the heart of Elora. “I am a child of the twentieth century. There were open roads coursed by convertibles without seat belts, and fastbacks with earth pounding V-8 engines. Brave men piloted massive rockets into “outer space”. We played outdoors unsupervised, went on Sunday drives. Our black and white TV picked up seven channels (three of them from Buffalo, NY). Blackened limestone mills were scattered about our city; their windows often agape releasing the thundering sounds of power hammers and the acrid smell of hot iron. All this has passed. My life has turned in unexpected ways. With little planning and no defined goals, I acted on a decades old desire to create; to use my hands, to make something. I learned to manipulate metals; earthly elements. Methods, techniques and technologies were studied, experimented with and practiced. My sculptural work is deeply rooted in that past century; the portion I witnessed and much that came before. But it is not nostalgic. Art deco skyscrapers, streamliners, air-cooled motorcycle engines, sci-fi movie sets and concept cars from Detroit: these are acknowledged; not mourned. Forms are always changing, in motion, leading me onward. I see in them something not wholly natural, but they are alive none-the-less; a dialogue and a dance unfolds between the organic and the manufactured. 2022 < All Sculptures 2022 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $1,500.00 Sustenance Jennifer Anne Kelly Sustenance Sustenance is an abstraction of a hollow log interpreted with Aleuria Aurantia (often referred to as Orange Peel Fungi). I am attracted to the symbiotic relationships in the forest. It is a reminder that we all need each other. We give each other sustenance. Jennifer Anne Kelly "I am inspired by what I do not yet understand. This is true of our natural world as I believe we are at the very beginning of understanding the abilities and experiences of other living things. It is also true of creating in glass. I strive to create what I have never seen created before. This leads to a lot of experimentation, trial, and error. My greatest challenge is accomplishing the effect I am looking for with each small element. When the final piece emerges and my heart jumps, I know I have succeeded." Jennifer Anne Kelly was born in Ottawa, Canada and spent a few early schooling years in London, England. Jennifer chose to stay in Ottawa when she returned and completed her formal education at Carleton University. At age twenty two she took a stained glass course in Ottawa and was completely entranced by this magic substance that was so many things at one time. She spent the following years experimenting with original designs in stained glass and then around 2010 she began experimenting with kiln worked glass. She has studied at many schools including Corning Studio, Pittsburgh Glass School, Urban Glass in New York, and Bullseye Glass Studio in Portland OR. In 2013 she was hired to create glass for Cirque du Soleil and that’s when she began to pursue glass creativity as a full time occupation. Kelly has since taught her glass techniques in Canada and the UK. "What energizes me? Fleeting moments in my daily activities or on one of my excursions in the forest and on water make my heart jump. It can be the view in front of me or an image in my mind. It is the spark that ignites my vision for a new glass artwork." Taking inspiration from dreams and time spent in nature and recreating the experience from memory, Kelly creates dream-like pieces from glass. Most pieces begin with glass powder. The fine powdered glass changes under heat in the kiln. The layering and shading of various powders is repeated several times with multiple trips into the kiln. Fine tools are used to etch into the powder and to shape the individual forms. In some cases, a torch is used to shape rods of glass into the anticipated forms. After torching, etching, and shaping, the glass goes back into the kiln for annealing. Her process of creating the various elements that go into a piece takes weeks and often months. "I create in glass as one would write a poem. It is at once deeply personal and yearning to be shared. When someone views my creation and has a deep connection I am overjoyed." The common glass thread through her work is the contemplation on the human experience in our natural world. Humans have always had a deeply emotional relationship with the world around us. We interpret metaphors in these scenes. We struggle at times to relate and at other times feel a profound interconnectedness with the universe. 2025 < All Sculptures 2025 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $1500.00 Bronze Sky Pods Danielle Reddick Bronze Sky Pods When I discovered bronze mesh, I realized that I could create forms that capture and return a light source. These forms gather life energy, balancing on the edge of sentience. Working with these materials as well as with universal light is a great privilege. With that in mind, I have created a bouquet of bronze pods. The notion is that they will look like giant golden blossoms in the raised garden beds. We cannot create light, we can radiate it, capture it and reflect it back. Danielle Reddick Danielle Reddick is a multimedia artist who has lived in Prince Edward County since 1984. From a very young age, it was clear that Danielle was an artist. Her current works reference the ethereal qualities she discovered in lithography at Queens University where she received an Hon BFA. Danielle has received a number of commissions for sculptures. She recently completed a large outdoor shrine for a client in Kingston. It is made from locally sourced stone and complete with solar lighting. In 2019, Danielle was commissioned by Glenwood Cemetery to create a WW2 soldier out of chicken wire. This project was funded by grants from the Prince Edward Arts Council and Huffs’ Estates Winery. This winter, Danielle manifested three large figures (10′-12’) of the Madonna, Maiden and Crone for a private collection. Over the years, Danielle has continued to make artworks outside of commissions. One of these, an art quilt, was displayed (with 5 other Canadian quilts) at quilt shows worldwide for 1 1/2 years representing Canada. Danielle was also a participant in the Royal Ontario Museum’s “Greenbelt Quilt of Possibilities.” Danielle has participated in many Juried shows including Art in the County, often winning Juror’s Choice awards and honourable mentions.

Stemming from recent American government policies imposed on Canada and the world, the reactions to these events have left everyone with a bewildered feeling. And then feelings wanting to defend and support each other. I thought it would be appropriate to create a mythical creature inspired by some of our renowned Canadian wildlife to represent this incredible patriotism we share by coming together. 2019 < All Sculptures 2019 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $750.00 Virtual Reali-Kitty Thoreau Bakker Thoreau Bakker is a Toronto-based contemporary artist, with a current focus on three-dimensional (3D) media. He holds an honours B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Guelph, and a master’s degree (MFA) from OCAD University. His MFA thesis questioned Walter Benjamin’s generalizations about aura and the mechanical reproduction of art in the context of recent 3D technologies like 3D printing and Virtual Reality. Current visual interests include neo-pop and mass-produced objects, of both aesthetic and utilitarian natures: toys, product packaging, etc. Current academic interests include the relationship between contemporary art and research, our definition of knowledge and the ways we acquire, synthesize and share it. 2021 < All Sculptures 2021 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Part of Sculpture Forest Collection Depth Don Frost Depth I had a lot of fun making this piece during the COVID-19 lockdowns. It was a real escape from the world and just evolved into this primitive, organic shape. I live beside a bike trail and this piece brought in many people off the path to see what I was working on. The mount is also unusual for me, going up on a diagonal which gives the piece some extra movement. The finish is graphite, top coated in a prismatic gold to magenta paint. The piece is made from fiberglass, and composites and is designed to withstand weather extremely well. Don Frost “The act of being a sculptor and continually experiencing the creative challenges in this multidimensional world causes a thought process that spills over into all facets of life causing the world of the artist to become a work of art” Peterborough born Don Frost had his future path laid out for him by winning first prize in a city wide art exposition at age six in grade one. The following year at age seven, Don had a group showing at thePeterborough Public Library. Public school had its usual trials and tribulations and it was not until grade 10 that Don discovered that he was colour blind to all but the primary colours. At this point Don’s life took a right turn and sculpture was all that he focused on. Don teamed up with a friend in grade 11 who became his art agent and they enjoyed considerable success in the Peterborough area. Afterhigh school Don took some time off to do his art and apprentice as a mechanic for a year. In 1973-74 he attended Sheridan Art College followed by a decision to become a professional sculptor having just received a major commission for a large 15' tall sculpture for a new mall being built in Peterborough, Ontario. This was followed by the creation of the largest sculpture in Canada in 1983 by winning a competition for an indoor work for the Michael Starr Building in Oshawa, Ontario. Always seeking new outlets for art Don acquired an art agent in Ottawa which led to an introduction to a patron who kept Don busy creating more than 40 sculptures in a period of twenty years. Don’s work internationally was recently a commission for four large works for a garden in Club Medjulis in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Previously to this in an expansive design project by the late King Hussein for a 1.6 km wall of huge relief panels commemorating the history of Jordan, Don’s work on six of these panels was accepted by King Abdullah. Experiencing greater notoriety for the global uniqueness of his art, Don was presented with awards from Peterborough County and commemorated in the Walk of Fame. It represents a tranquil and thoughtful young woman. With her hair tied back, Annie depicts the ease of beautiful youth. When Caroleanne was creating Annie, she explained that she works with a sculpture until she feels the rhythm of the shape. She continues sculpting until she is totally satisfied with something that is beautiful. Carolanne MacLean I feel I am working with energy, whether painting or sculpting. I am interested in the healing value of colour and the surprising beauty of the accidental mark, and intrigued by the very existence of our response to beauty. I am motivated to soothe the world through thoughtful introspection. I long to create a world where I can feel at peace and a little more in control. ~Caroleanne MacLean~ Carolanne MacLean was born in Toronto in 1949. She is a graduate with honours of the Ontario College of Art in Fine Art and has a B.A. from the University of Toronto. Her large encaustic abstract works are a study in light, colour and texture, sometimes involving the figure, often nonrepresentational. Her City Souls paintings capture moments, passing expressions on the faces around us. She pursues the beauty of the figure through a regular sculpture practice.
