2023 < All Sculptures 2023 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Contact Artist for Pricing Abstract 7 Elise Muller Abstract 7 Carrara Marble Abstract #7 is carved from Carrara Marble and depicts a continuous line that is twisted and intertwined. There is no beginning and no end to this sculpture, much like a Mobius strip. This is the seventh abstract sculpture that I have completed inspired by the endless variations on that theme. This sculpture was in front of the Elora Centre for the Arts last year as part of the Elora Sculpture Project. Elise Muller Elise Muller’s granite sculpture "Attunement" won the 2018/19 Canadian Sculpture Competition at Kingsbrae Garden in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Elise has been sculpting stone since 2001 when she took her first of many courses at Haliburton School of Art + Design. Elise carves stylized figures in a variety of stone like limestone, granite, and marble. She enjoys the whole process of stone sculpting from picking the stone to chiseling, to seeing the figures emerge, to filing, to polishing. In 2016 Elise carved the limestone sculpture of a family that is in front of the Dorset Community Health Hub. Three of her sculptures have been on public display in Elora and Fergus as part of the Elora Sculpture Project from 2016-2018. Elise was part of the Haliburton Downtown Sculpture Exhibition in 2019 with her limestone “Dancers” and pleased to return in 2023 with “Abstract #7 ”. 2023 < All Sculptures 2023 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Contact Artist for Pricing Grow Together Eric Tardiff Grow Together Aluminium When we talk about cohabitation, I immediately think of social cohabitation, of living together in peace and respect for each other. We hope and desire the inclusion of different cultures and social classes in our society. That being said, the project that I propose to you here is intended to be unifying by its purpose and intriguing by its form. The sculpture suggests the inclusion of people around us for a better cohabitation starting with the Me and ending with Them It is an interactive sculpture where the visitor is invited to pose their figure in the last facial space, the ME. I chose to put the two official languages for a specific purpose of integrating the two host cultures. In addition, seen in profile, the sculpture also refers to a megaphone, symbolizing the desire to be heard. I think a lot of photos will be taken by visitors because of the interactive face concept. Éric Tardif Éric Tardif is from Kamouraska, a region in the Bas Saint-Laurent municipality in Quebec. Tardif originally studied Natural Sciences but turned to studying the arts and sculpture to explore his passion and artistic talent. In his work Tardif explores dimension, movement, and space. He works with several different materials and mediums in his work from wood, metal, and also has variety of mixed media 2D work as well. Tardif pushes the art world in both his concepts as well as his avant-garde method of steam-folding wood for his wood sculptures. This technique allows for his wooden sculptures to be full of movement and curved forms. He has received grants from CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec) and SODEC (Société de développement des entreprises culturelles) for several years. In recent years, Éric has expanded his artwork into bronze sculpture and has returned to his multimedia work. For the past 5 years, Eric has been working and designing Public Art and expressive outdoor sculptures in aluminum. 2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $2000.00 Red Woman Breanna Shanahan Red Woman This sculpture was created using forten cement and therapeutic bands. It stands 60 inches tall and is mounted on a treated steel cut base which is the shadow of the figure. This piece challenges objectified female bodies through a lens of sport and athleticism. Commonly in media, female figures are decapitated, focusing on their sexualization. Athletic therapeutic bands are used to make up gestural muscles in this piece. It sits confidently with chin up, composed only with appendages of action, reclaiming headlessness with hands resting crossed and feet relaxed. Like many of the objectified female figures we are used to, it is not about “who” this is, but rather about who it could be, allowing viewers to reflect on anatomy, physicality and dignity of such a body which is rarely exemplified. ~Breanna Shanahan~ Breanna Shanahan Breanna is a multi media artist and resides in Hamilton, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours In Art and Art History and Crime and Psych. She attended Sheridan College of Arts and Design receiving a Diploma in Fine Arts. Breanna also graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, QC. She has exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions across Canada, in the United States and in Austria. 2021 < All Sculptures 2021 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $3,800.00 Black Reflection Robert Wehkamp Black Reflection A carved contemporary hardwood sculpture. There is no specific message, just the beauty of the wood grain, form, geometry and colour for the viewer to enjoy. Robert Wehkamp "As a mixed-media artist, Robert is inspired through two life-long passions: nature and technology" Through sculpting, he draws his inspiration from nature. With his pieces, he aims to harmonize nature and abstraction. The basis of the sculpture is the reduction of the essential expression. With few components, the pieces should make a lasting impression, connecting with their environment. They are conceptualized with a distinct surrounding in mind. On the other hand, Robert's paintings are motivated by technology, portrayed through the bright colours, sharp angles, and geometrical concepts. 2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Not for Sale The Happy Hippo Nyasha Mabika The Happy Hippo The Happy Hippo sculpture was created using springstone from Zimbabwe. This sculpture was exhibited at the ZimArt Rice Lake Gallery, just outside of Peterborough. The owner, Fran Fearnley retired last fall, closing her gallery permanently. She donated the Happy Hippo to the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. We thought it would be wonderful to have the Happy Hippo in downtown Haliburton for the exhibition. The Happy Hippo will be installed in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest in late October this year. Nyasha Mabika Nyasha Mabika was born in 1974 in Mutare, in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. He attended both primary and secondary school in Bvumba a beautiful mountainous region near the Mozambique border. When Nyasha completed high school in 1991 he began visiting local sculpting co-operatives and assisting sculptors with sanding and polishing their sculptures. Having decided stone sculpting was a career he wished to pursue, Nyasha moved to St. Mary's in Chitungwiza to begin a formal apprenticeship with his cousin Winston Magura. In 1996, Nyasha had completed his apprenticeship and was looking for new challenges. He joined a group of other artists to found an arts co-operative, the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, where he remained an active member until 2016. He now works from his home studio in Epworth. Nyasha goes to the mine himself to select stone, which is his first source of information. He enjoys working with hard stones like Leopard Rock, Springstone and Opal. Attracted to wildlife, Nyasha says that is what most often, he sees in the raw stone. His sculptures have sold to galleries and collectors from Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada. 2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $4200.00 Nature Prevails Mark Puigmarti Nature Prevails I Mark Puigmarti created Nature Prevails I using forged and fabricated structural steel. The sculpture stands 72" high and weighs approximately 200lbs. Nature Prevails I is intended to inspire hope. No matter what humankind builds, creates, or discards, nature will prevail. This piece represents a minute example of a structural bridge detail called a gusset plate connection. Carefully designed and engineered for structural integrity using steel elements like angle iron and steel plates riveted throughout, is in itself an amazing feat of human innovation and progress. Yet even these monumental structures uncared for, or abandoned are always trying to revert back to their elemental beginnings through slow decay. These three angle iron sections have been hot forged into vine like growth returning back to their natural origins. Mark Puigmarti What seems like lifetimes ago I was refrigeration and HVAC mechanic. Working on commercial industrial gizmos that kept things or people warm or cold, while usually experiencing the polar opposite temperature of whatever it was I was trying to rectify. It is a respectable trade that many men and some women make a respectable living at. However, as much as I tried to make the piping arrangements visually pleasing, orderly, and followable there was something lacking. It just never quite clicked with my persistent dream to follow a more artistic path. One day about half way into a 25-year run at HVACR, I made it my mission to try and change what seemed truly unchangeable. Slowly with a long list of coincidences, happy accidents and a load of sacrifices, particularly by my supportive wife Chris, positive results started to accumulate in the intended direction of working with hot metal. This did indeed take 10 years of incremental progression to end up at the beginning of a new and completely unrecognizable life and style. It is not lost on me to grasp the sheer improbability to do that mid-career, in that career, or any for that matter. That cord was cut 14 years ago now." Retrieving Courage is a mixed media/recycled materials sculpture that is symbolic of strength when facing adversity. Pets bring joy and happiness, provide laughter and reduce stress. Pet owners can relate to the humour of the e-collar/cone (the awkwardness). The protective collar is inscribed with numerous encouraging messages and joyful doodles like the get-well wishes written on plaster casts. Everyone needs a best friend of sunshine to offer support when life becomes challenging. A mascot for empowerment and positivity, Retrieving Courage demonstrates that sometimes you end up in a cone, but it’s going to be OK. Life is full of cones, those bumps in the road that knock you off course, stand tall and wear yours proudly. My goal is that people interact with the dog by reading the notes on the collar and walk away feeling happier and more courageous. Kim Collins Kim Collins is a graphic designer and sustainable artist from Lincoln, Ont. The majority of her design career has been in the sports industry, creating graphics for bicycles. From her studio, she provides local and international clients with creative services from illustration to packaging. Kim is constantly working on mixed media fine art in both 2 and 3 dimensions for exhibition and public display. Common themes throughout her pieces are nostalgia and surrealism with a rich saturated palette and recycled materials. “As an artist and outdoor enthusiast, I am extremely conscious of the materials and processes used in my artwork. Most or if not all of my pieces use recycled canvases, mistinted paint or some other reused component. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment to re-purpose unwanted discarded and damaged items from thrift stores by turning them into new artworks. 2022 < All Sculptures 2022 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $4,000.00 A Flower Szonja Vucsetics Depth “A Flower '' is part of an ongoing series of work titled “Container Garden in Tkaronto”. This series uses the image of plants metaphorically to describe human struggles, emotions and mechanisms. Contemplating land and soil as the place that holds our stories of survival within a natural cycle of impermanence through life and death, it reflects on notions of displacement, relocation, settlement and coexistence. Like potted plants which are uprooted, contained, isolated and replanted elsewhere, I reflect on a childhood journey of emmigration and loneliness. The sculpture is carved out of a single elm log, standing on a concrete pedestal. Szonja Vucsetics Szonja Vucsetics is a Hungarian - Canadian artist based in Toronto, working primarily in oil paint and mixed media on paper. She graduated in drawing and painting from OCAD University in 2007 and has lived and worked in Hungary, Jamaica and Canada. Fascinated from early childhood by the expressive voice of colour in nature and visual imagery, Vucsetics looked to expressionism and storybook illustrations to relate her work through her early years as an artist. Using art as a therapy through life experiences, traumas and journeys, her work continuously developed as a visual journal telling the story of lived and subconscious experiences. Her illustrative works speak the visual language of stories and dreams, playfully blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination, impression and expression, representation and abstraction. Through material explorations with brushwork and colour, her work often focuses on our relationship to land as the place that holds our stories. 2019 < All Sculptures 2019 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Sold - Part of Sculpture Forest Collection DAS BUCH XXIII Marianne Reim Marianne Reim was born and raised in Germany and immigrated to Canada when she was 22. She earned her BA in Art and Art History at McMaster University in Hamilton, and resides in St. Catharines, Canada. Her work has been exhibited globally in 17 countries across six continents and is the recipient of numerous awards and grants for her work. Her work can be found in private collection, Government of Ontario Art Collection Archives, and public collections of Art Galleries and Sculpture parks. Artist Statement The specific forms of my work float on the surface of a well of memory. I create discreet objects, objects in series and installation. My preferred material is steel. In my constructions, the material wears its identity through rough-cut edges, visible welds and an undisguised slabness. I may combine them with glass, stone, text, and photographs. The figure is carved out of a single plane tree log, and the fire from a cedar stump. Stained black, with pieces of shell and metal flake inlay, the blanket depicts a night sky rendering an image of the universe. This installation explores the connection between micro- and macrocosm (mortal human life within vast infinity), and nature as our beginning, ending, nurturer and destroyer. 2025 < All Sculptures 2025 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Not For Sale Ma'iingan Jared Tait Ma'iingen This two sided woodland painting of a spirit wolf is part of a larger installation "Bawaajigan" "To Dream" located in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. (see Bawaajigan ) Jared Tait Jared Tait is a member of the Sachigo Lake First Nation an Oji-Cree First Nation in Treaty 9, territory in the far north of Ontario near the Manitoba border. Jared was raised in Thunder Bay. He currently resides with his family in the countryside near Bancroft. In 2018, Jared began painting under the mentorship of his father, Tim Tait, a self-taught artist. Jared recalls his childhood being surrounded by his father’s paintings and being told stories within them. Since his exposure to art at a young age, Jared has created a strong appreciation and connection to art. Through his understanding of the Woodland style and the methods of telling stories through his work, Jared captures the deep relations to the land and its creatures. He builds on these motivations to preserve the sacred stories, symbolism and teachings. Jared creates imagery inspired by his personal and spiritual experiences and hopes to pass his teachings on to future generations.
