  • Friends

2025 < All Sculptures 2025 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $4000.00 Friends Marlene Kawalez Friends The connection we have with nature is beautifully represented in this sculpture. “Friends” is created with winterstone and mixed media. Marlene Kawalez For the past few years, I have been creating pieces that often explore themes of life, the reflection of time, and the peeling away of exterior layers to reveal internal intricacies. In many ways, it is an introspection into my personal journey and that of others that I was privy to observe. The purpose behind my work is to expose, express, and provide insight into the raw emotions involved in the journey of life through clay, wood, and glass. The application of wood and clay is essential as a direct conduit to the root of nature and our existence. Glass, in retrospect, represents the fragility of life and the continuity of movement and time.

2025 < All Sculptures 2025 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $2400.00 Geese Please Kim Collins Geese Please Mixed recycled contents: fabric sculpture-ripstop nylon/polyester from kitesurfing, windsurfing and camping tents, speciality sailcloth with kevlar, woven tarp, aluminum rigging rod, polyurethane foam, cotton, felt, and wood From the discarded remnants of high-performance outdoor textiles—tents, kitesurfing sails, and windsurfing sails—emerges a striking Canadian Goose sculpture. This artwork embodies the spirit of outdoor adventure and wildlife through its recycled composition. The process of repurposing these technical fabrics challenges the traditional linear consumption model, acting as a direct intervention against waste culture and drawing attention to the pervasive problem of microplastic pollution. The initial spark for this project was a single, damaged camping tent, a piece of waste that ignited an investigation into the possibilities of textile up-cycling. Kim Collins Kim is a multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer residing in Niagara. Captivated by our natural world, her colourful 2 and 3 dimensional pieces express joy and humour. Known for her inventive use of recycled contents, Kim paints, collages and stitches together mixed materials to best emphasize the aesthetic qualities. For over a decade, Kim's design career has been in the sports industry, creating bicycle graphics and supporting marketing collateral. • Vitessence

2019 < All Sculptures 2019 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $2,100.00 Vitessence David Cross David Cross belongs to a select group of Artisan Blacksmiths who work full-time in the craft, preserving its traditional techniques and aesthetics but employing them in contemporary design. He creates both functional metalwork and sculpture. David’s artistic practice has expanded beyond hand-forged works to include other media and methods. He has produced castings of aluminum and silicon bronze using the ancient lost wax technique, and has created assemblies including materials such as stainless steel, repurposed machine parts, and found objects. In some of his work natural, flowing shapes are coaxed from the metals while in others the human and organic elements are presented against the industrial, engineered environments. A native of Galt, Ontario, David now lives in Fergus and operates Rio Bravo Ironworks in the heart of Elora. “I am a child of the twentieth century. There were open roads coursed by convertibles without seat belts, and fastbacks with earth pounding V-8 engines. Brave men piloted massive rockets into “outer space”. We played outdoors unsupervised, went on Sunday drives. Our black and white TV picked up seven channels (three of them from Buffalo, NY). Blackened limestone mills were scattered about our city; their windows often agape releasing the thundering sounds of power hammers and the acrid smell of hot iron. All this has passed. My life has turned in unexpected ways. With little planning and no defined goals, I acted on a decades old desire to create; to use my hands, to make something. I learned to manipulate metals; earthly elements. Methods, techniques and technologies were studied, experimented with and practiced. My sculptural work is deeply rooted in that past century; the portion I witnessed and much that came before. But it is not nostalgic. Art deco skyscrapers, streamliners, air-cooled motorcycle engines, sci-fi movie sets and concept cars from Detroit: these are acknowledged; not mourned. Forms are always changing, in motion, leading me onward. I see in them something not wholly natural, but they are alive none-the-less; a dialogue and a dance unfolds between the organic and the manufactured. These interactions are sometimes tense and threatening, sometimes melodic and serene, always genuine.” Artist Contact Information riobravo@wightman.ca

  • Sustenance

2022 < All Sculptures 2022 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $1,500.00 Sustenance Jennifer Anne Kelly Sustenance Sustenance is an abstraction of a hollow log interpreted with Aleuria Aurantia (often referred to as Orange Peel Fungi). I am attracted to the symbiotic relationships in the forest. It is a reminder that we all need each other. We give each other sustenance. Jennifer Anne Kelly "I am inspired by what I do not yet understand. This is true of our natural world as I believe we are at the very beginning of understanding the abilities and experiences of other living things. It is also true of creating in glass. I strive to create what I have never seen created before. This leads to a lot of experimentation, trial, and error. My greatest challenge is accomplishing the effect I am looking for with each small element. When the final piece emerges and my heart jumps, I know I have succeeded." Jennifer Anne Kelly was born in Ottawa, Canada and spent a few early schooling years in London, England. Jennifer chose to stay in Ottawa when she returned and completed her formal education at Carleton University. At age twenty two she took a stained glass course in Ottawa and was completely entranced by this magic substance that was so many things at one time. She spent the following years experimenting with original designs in stained glass and then around 2010 she began experimenting with kiln worked glass. She has studied at many schools including Corning Studio, Pittsburgh Glass School, Urban Glass in New York, and Bullseye Glass Studio in Portland OR. In 2013 she was hired to create glass for Cirque du Soleil and that’s when she began to pursue glass creativity as a full time occupation. Kelly has since taught her glass techniques in Canada and the UK. "What energizes me? Fleeting moments in my daily activities or on one of my excursions in the forest and on water make my heart jump. It can be the view in front of me or an image in my mind. It is the spark that ignites my vision for a new glass artwork." Taking inspiration from dreams and time spent in nature and recreating the experience from memory, Kelly creates dream-like pieces from glass. Most pieces begin with glass powder. The fine powdered glass changes under heat in the kiln. The layering and shading of various powders is repeated several times with multiple trips into the kiln. Fine tools are used to etch into the powder and to shape the individual forms. In some cases, a torch is used to shape rods of glass into the anticipated forms. After torching, etching, and shaping, the glass goes back into the kiln for annealing. Her process of creating the various elements that go into a piece takes weeks and often months. "I create in glass as one would write a poem. It is at once deeply personal and yearning to be shared. When someone views my creation and has a deep connection I am overjoyed." The common glass thread through her work is the contemplation on the human experience in our natural world. Humans have always had a deeply emotional relationship with the world around us. We interpret metaphors in these scenes. We struggle at times to relate and at other times feel a profound interconnectedness with the universe. • The Owl and the Pussycat

2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $18,000.00 The Owl and the Pussycat George Pratt The Owl and The Pussycat This sculpture was created using salt and pepper granite. With a total weight of approximatley 1800lbs, this sculpture was created in British Columbia and transported across Canada to be exhibited in downtown Haliburton. George Pratt was inspired to carve this sculpture based on the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" written by Edward Lear in 1871. George recited the poem when he was 10 years old and has never forgotten it. In this sculpture you will see many of the important elements of the poem. Can you spot the pea green boat, the honey jar, money and a small guitar? At the base of the sculpture you will see a plaque displaying the poem. George Pratt George Pratt is a professional stone sculptor who was initially introduced to the stone-carving arts by E.B. Cox in 1970. His works are carved in granite, marble, jade and other exotic ornamental stones of Canada. Having produced 25 annual shows beginning in 1972, his work is widely collected in North America by private individuals and corporations. Large works commissioned for public display include the Terry Fox Memorial, Coquitlam, B.C.; the Sedna Sculpture, Toronto. Ontario; The Builders, Calgary, Alberta; the Alaskan Veteran's Memorial; 'The Sundial', Sechelt, B.C. ‘Salmon River’ and ‘Rejuvenation’ sculptures in granite in Burnaby, British Columbia; and ‘The Emperor’s Sunrise’ a sculpture in jade shown at the British Columbia Canada Pavilion, 2008 Beijing Olympics. George has sculpted many presentation works for foreign dignitaries, notably HRH Prince Philip; the Honourable Mary Robinson, President, Republic of Ireland; the Honourable Kim Young Sam, President of the Republic of Korea; the Honourable Corazon Aquino, President of the Philippines; President Boris Yeltsin, Russia and President William Clinton of the United States. • Art of Noise

2021 < All Sculptures 2021 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $3,500.00 Art of Noise Mark Puigmarti Art of Noise A sound sculpture that utilizes a chunk of structural steel destined for the scrap yard. The incredible mass of the metal gives it wonderful subdued resonance that you can feel when struck. Mark Puigmarti What seems like lifetimes ago I was refrigeration and HVAC mechanic. Working on commercial industrial gizmos that kept things or people warm or cold, while usually experiencing the polar opposite temperature of whatever it was I was trying to rectify. It is a respectable trade that many men and some women make a respectable living at. However, as much as I tried to make the piping arrangements visually pleasing, orderly, and followable there was something lacking. It just never quite clicked with my persistent dream to follow a more artistic path. One day about half way into a 25 year run at HVACR, I made it my mission to try and change what seemed truly unchangeable. Slowly with a long list of coincidences, happy accidents and a load of sacrifices, particularly by my supportive wife Chris, positive results started to accumulate in the intended direction of working with hot metal. This did indeed take 10 years of incremental progression to end up at the beginning of a new and completely unrecognizable life and style. It is not lost on me to grasp the sheer improbability to do that mid-career, in that career, or any for that matter. That cord was cut 14 years ago now." The Gray Jay in this sculpture is carved from Indiana Limestone and it is perched on a “fencepost" carved from Travertine (Adair Marble). It is attached to a steel base as it was part of the Elora Sculpture Project. It's a great Gatekeeper, having guarded the entrance to Stone Tree Studio ever since. Now it's time for the Gray Jay to fly off and see new places. ~Elise Muller~ Elise Muller Eilse Muller's work began in 2001 with 3 Stone Carving courses at the Haliburton School of Art + Design, where she is now a part time faculty member. She sculpts with natural rocks and minerals for both indoor and outdoor sculptures. Elise has brought the natural aspects of her sculpture practice into her jewelry and printmaking. • Soul of A Boy

2025 < All Sculptures 2025 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition $1800.00 Soul of A Boy Carole Chaloupka Burton Soul of a Boy This work is part of the "Fragile Masculinity" series, inspired by men and boys who struggle to find acceptance for the more vulnerable parts of their natures in a world that often doesn’t make space for the softer incarnations of masculinity. In particular, this work is an art-based response to the loss of the artist’s younger brother, and the manifestation of her compassion and concern for the men and boys who feel pressured to abandon the more tender sides of their natures in order to conform. Sculpted in water-based clay, a mold was then made to cast subsequent limited editions. Carole Chaloupka Burton Carole received her Master of Fine Arts at Toronto’s OCAD University and her BA (Hons) at Sunderland University in her native North East England. Carole specializes in evocative portraiture and figurative sculpture that captures fleeting moments of inner reflection that are both deeply private, and vastly universal. Her sensitive expressive work explores the embodied experience of having memories, thoughts, emotions and intuition contained within our bodies, and seeks to give form to these invisible and difficult-to-articulate feelings and sensations. Themes within Carole’s work include vulnerability, meaning-making and our achingly bittersweet knowledge of the impermanence of embodied mortal life.

Land Acknowledgment

We would like to acknowledge that we are located on ancestral lands, the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabe covered by the Williams Treaties. This area, known to the Anishinaabe as “Gidaaki”, has been inhabited for thousands of years – as territories for hunting, fishing, gathering and growing food.

For thousands of years Indigenous people have been the stewards of this place. The intent and spirit of the treaties that form the legal basis of Canada bind us to share the land “for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the rivers flow”.
