  • Doug Stephens

Doug Stephens has been carving stone since taking a course in Haliburton in 1998. Years before he had worked in the set department for film and television and then went on to study sculpture in Halifax at the Nova Scotia School of Fine Art, but had not settled on a medium that had any real meaning for him. That changed when he studied in Haliburton with George Pratt, who then invited him to spend some months in Vancouver apprenticing at his studio. Later that year, Doug opened his own studio in Muskoka and has had his work shown in galleries in Bala, Gravenhurst, Rosseau and Haliburton. Every summer since then he has taught at the Haliburton School of The Arts. In May of 2001 he moved his studio to Belleville and began working as a full-time sculptor for the Campbell Monument Company, carving sculptures for the local and North American market. < All Artists Doug Stephens ABOUT SCULPTOR Artist Bio Doug Stephens has been carving stone since taking a course in Haliburton in 1998. • John McKinnon | Haliburton Sculpture Forest | Ontario

John McKinnon is a Canadian visual artist who has spent the past 40 years working in stone, bronze, steel, concrete and mixed media. John McKinnon Website: johnmckinnon.ca John has spent most of the past 40 years working in stone, bronze, steel, clay, concrete and mixed-media. John is known primarily as a sculptor, although he also expresses himself through other disciplines such as painting, printmaking, drawing and multi-media. Throughout his career he has endeavoured to play and experiment with whatever came his way. He feels that an idea that cannot be expressed with one media can be expressed well in another. From time to time over the years he has worked in the commercial art business which has inspired some of his later artwork. In the past 12 years he has developed an interest in working in the ephemeral media of ice, snow and sand. The creation of these non-permanent works give him what he refers to as the Zen-Sculpting experience and have taken him to many exotic places around the world. Teaching has been a great inspiration for John. In the early eighties he taught at David Thompson University in Nelson. From the mid eighties until now he has taught modern hard stone carving technique to Inuit carvers in many communities in the Canadian Arctic. During this period he also taught many courses in Sculpture at Fleming College’s Haliburton School of The Arts in Haliburton, Ontario. John lives in Nelson, British Columbia. < Back to Artists

  • Musical Inspiration

Simon Chidharara All Sculptures Musical Inspiration Number on Map 25 Artist Simon Chidharara Material Springstone, Dolomite Installation Date June 1, 2014 Learn About the Artist “The musical instrument in this sculpture has a natural bond and connection to human life. Music entertains and educates us and speaks a universal language. The Dolomite lines represent the lyrics accompanying the music from the guitar. The lady is listening to the inspiring lyrics and music and it gives her happiness and peace. Music can do that.” Simon found this particular piece of springstone in a quarry up a mountain side in Zimbabwe. He and a crew of men careful carried it down the mountain so that the stone face would not be damaged. The shape had immediately spoken to him and he had the image for his sculpture. With a stringed musical instrument on one side and a woman listening to the music on the other side. All of the work on the sculpture is done by hand. The smooth sections were sanded with 7 grades of sandpaper. These smooth surfaces were then heated with fire to open up the pores of the stone and wax infused into the stone, The white lines were created by cutting grooves in the stones, grinding up dolomite and gluing the white granules into the grooves. Simon has been the artist in residence twice over the past 10 years at ZimArt and was present for the installation of the sculpture. ZimArt was an initiative created by Fran Fearnley in the year 2000. ZimArt's Rice Lake Gallery, was located in Bailieboro, Ontario (mid-way between Peterborough and Port Hope), representing over 50 Zimbabwean stone sculptors. The most comprehensive collection of hand-carved Zimbabwean stone sculpture in Canada was on display in a beautiful natural setting overlooking Rice Lake. Each year ZimArt hosted a visiting artist from Zimbabwe. More Photos Previous Next

  • Fire and Ice: A Really Big Shoe

Youkie Stagg < Back Originally Published On: January 1, 2016 Originally Published By: Haliburton Echo Fire and Ice: A Really Big Shoe Written By: Youkie Stagg Local artist Charles O’Neil is well known for his wire sculptures of animal and human figures. It was not until shoe designer, Stuart Weitzman approached O’Neil at The Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia and asked him to create a shoe sculpture for his corporate art collection that O’Neil branched into non-figurative forms. When Barb Bolin, principal of Fleming College’s Haliburton campus, retired after 35 years, her friends and co-workers created a fund to honour her with a sculpture of her choice. She asked O’Neil if he would create larger version of a shoe for the Sculpture Forest. Since O’Neil already had created a wire sculpture (Embracing Eos) for the Sculpture Forest, Bolin knew that he would be able to adapt his shoe design for the outdoors. The piece is made of stainless steel wire, steel rods, red glass beads from the Czech Republic, and clear, faceted glass beads from China. The Sculpture Forest, in Glebe Park, Haliburton, offers free guided tours each Tuesday from 10-11:30 am and a shorter “Curator Selection” tour on Wednesday from 12:10 – 12:50. Meet at kiosk in the Fleming College parking lot. www.haliburtonsculptureforest.ca < Previous Article Next Article >

  • The Happy Hippo

2024 < All Sculptures 2024 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Not for Sale The Happy Hippo Nyasha Mabika The Happy Hippo The Happy Hippo sculpture was created using springstone from Zimbabwe. This sculpture was exhibited at the ZimArt Rice Lake Gallery, just outside of Peterborough. The owner, Fran Fearnley retired last fall, closing her gallery permanently. She donated the Happy Hippo to the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. We thought it would be wonderful to have the Happy Hippo in downtown Haliburton for the exhibition. The Happy Hippo will be installed in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest in late October this year. Nyasha Mabika Nyasha Mabika was born in 1974 in Mutare, in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. He attended both primary and secondary school in Bvumba a beautiful mountainous region near the Mozambique border. When Nyasha completed high school in 1991 he began visiting local sculpting co-operatives and assisting sculptors with sanding and polishing their sculptures. Having decided stone sculpting was a career he wished to pursue, Nyasha moved to St. Mary's in Chitungwiza to begin a formal apprenticeship with his cousin Winston Magura. In 1996, Nyasha had completed his apprenticeship and was looking for new challenges. He joined a group of other artists to found an arts co-operative, the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, where he remained an active member until 2016. He now works from his home studio in Epworth. Nyasha goes to the mine himself to select stone, which is his first source of information. He enjoys working with hard stones like Leopard Rock, Springstone and Opal. Attracted to wildlife, Nyasha says that is what most often, he sees in the raw stone. His sculptures have sold to galleries and collectors from Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada. ZimArt started to represent Nyasha in Canada in 2017. Artist Contact Information Email : Website : www.chitungwizaarts.org Instagram: Facebook:

  • Aerial

2023 < All Sculptures 2023 Downtown Haliburton Sculpture Exhibition Contact Artist for Pricing Aerial Mark Puigmarti Aerial Forged Stainless Steel & Bronze Sometimes my work is a result of visualizing processes of forging effects, and reinterpreting these effects as details in the natural world. Ariel uses several forging processes that combine in the simplistic form of a heron about to take fight. Mark Puigmarti What seems like lifetimes ago I was refrigeration and HVAC mechanic. Working on commercial industrial gizmos that kept things or people warm or cold, while usually experiencing the polar opposite temperature of whatever it was I was trying to rectify. It is a respectable trade that many men and some women make a respectable living at. However, as much as I tried to make the piping arrangements visually pleasing, orderly, and followable there was something lacking. It just never quite clicked with my persistent dream to follow a more artistic path. One day about half way into a 25-year run at HVACR, I made it my mission to try and change what seemed truly unchangeable. Slowly with a long list of coincidences, happy accidents and a load of sacrifices, particularly by my supportive wife Chris, positive results started to accumulate in the intended direction of working with hot metal. This did indeed take 10 years of incremental progression to end up at the beginning of a new and completely unrecognizable life and style. It is not lost on me to grasp the sheer improbability to do that mid-career, in that career, or any for that matter. That cord was cut 14 years ago now." Land Acknowledgment

We would like to acknowledge that we are located on ancestral lands, the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabe covered by the Williams Treaties. This area, known to the Anishinaabe as “Gidaaki”, has been inhabited for thousands of years – as territories for hunting, fishing, gathering and growing food.

For thousands of years Indigenous people have been the stewards of this place. The intent and spirit of the treaties that form the legal basis of Canada bind us to share the land “for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the rivers flow”.
